Cocoa plays a key role in Cameroon’s National Economy. In order to meet up requerements of European Union, Cameroonian authorities in the cocoa sector have taken a number of long-lasting measures to better production. It is in this regard that the Minister of Trade Luc Magloire MBARGA ATANGANA has chaired a ceremony for the handing over of over 44 rehabilitated ovens to some cocoa farmers in Bafia, a locality in the Muyuka sub-division.
The exercise of ovens rehabilitationin the South West Region comes after the distribution of tarpaulins to cocoa producers in the Centre Region of Cameroon. The aim behind these operations is to improve national cocoa quality, ease the flow of the produce on global markets and better sell the image of this sector internationally.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Minister of Trade guaranteed cocoa producers regarding government’s determination to address the disturbing issue of smoky cocoa beans from the South West Region. Similarly, he urged cocoa farmers to adhere to new techniques for better cocoa production in Cameroon.
So far, over 141 old European ovens which require repairs have been identified within the South West Region. This might just be the beginning of glorious days of cocoa from that locality. In order to achiveset goals, the project has been valued at cfaf 100.000.000 with an average cost of cfaf 450.000 for the rehabilitation per oven.
Financed by the Cocoa and Coffee Inter-professional Council, the project is expected to run for a period of four months.
