This is the proposal made by the Minister Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana of Commerce who chaired this 12 August 2020 in Yaoundé in the presence of the Secretary General Brusil Miranda Metou, the meeting of commercialization of fish from local production.
In order to ensure better visibility, he soon intends to organize, with the help of the Town Hall of Yaoundé and elsewhere, special marketing operations. From a reliable source, Cameroon imported in 2018 225294220 T of fish for an amount of 154608457 FCFA. In 2019 nearly 185751862 T of frozen sea fish were imported . The envelope per year amounts to 180 billion FCFA . This is one of the reasons for the trade deficit. At the consultation chaired in Yaoundé in this ministerial department on 13 January last on the fish sector, the problem of supply of locally produced fish markets was on the agenda. It had been decided to put in place a strategy to boost its commercialization.
The coronavirus pandemic has forced countries to withdraw to the consumption of local products, the Cameroonian public authorities for the 2021 fiscal year are determined to place a special emphasis on the policy of import-substitution in order to reduce the abusive dependence on the outside. Taking part in the meeting of this 12 August 2020 at the Ministry of Commerce, Divine Ngala the coordinator of the aquaculture project of the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and animal industries, recalled that Cameroon imports nearly 230 thousand tons last year, the year 2019 was marked by a production of 335 thousand tons. He imported 2000 T of tilapias for example to fill the gap. In addition to the training of fish farmers, the government has signed an agreement with the mission of regulating the supply of consumer products-MIRAP for the sale of fish in its control markets.
Participants noted difficulties such as the need to increase production' insufficient seed, lack of funding, high cost of fry, food etc.Mbang Ekoutou vice-president of the Chamber of Agriculture believes that : "we can make our own fish food, the composition is not complicated...the lack of processing equipment on site is a problem".
The solution comes from the government to believe the boss of Commerce : "it is total deconstruction, there is no organization, the government must be an actor and not an observer of the Interprofession ... we will organize special marketing operations, the ideal is to arrive at a structuring of the fish sector. We will make the necessary arrangements, the same is being done with beef meat, the creation of which kiosks in envisaged. We are going with the help of the town hall to organize operations even outside Yaoundé ".
