Nigeria, the only African candidate for the post of Director General of the World Trade Organization(WTO), has received unconditional support from her continent. It was at the end of today's meeting of African Union trade ministers by videoconference.
Ngonzi Okonjo-Iweala's candidacy was the only item on the agenda of the special session of trade ministers of the African Union held this Friday, October 16, 2020. The candidate for the post of Director General of the World Trade Organization(WTO), was invited to decline her project. In a four-minute presentation, the Nigerian managed to seduce her interlocutors. It has placed Africa's industrialization at the heart of its action. It also promised to work towards WTO reform. Following this brief presentation of his project, several members of the government made statements. It emerged that all African countries supported the Nigerian candidacy.
Cameroon, through the voice of its spokesman, the Minister of trade Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, reaffirmed its unwavering support for the African candidate. "I would like to reiterate here the strong support, the strong support of the Government of Cameroon, the president of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya to the candidacy Dr Ngonzi", introduced Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana. And the Minister of trade of Cameroon to continue : "Africa has a unique opportunity to make its voice heard at the highest level when it comes to trade ".
The government member also invited to the sacred union behind the Nigerian candidacy. "Cameroon calls on all African states to stand behind Dr. Ngonzi's candidacy. Not only to rally, but to gather our friends beyond Africa, the European Union, the ACP countries, so that The Voice of Africa triumphs and that the WTO regains its fundamentals through an African General Directorate ", underlined Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana. "This is not the time for big speeches. The time is to come together and the Government of Cameroon will play its full part so that Ngonzi's candidacy passes ", concluded almost prophetically, the Minister of Trade of Cameroon.
Former Minister of Finance of Nigeria, Ngonzi Okonjo-Iweala is the first African woman to reach the final stage of selection for the post of Director General of the WTO. Nigeria has taken over two other African candidates: Egypt's Abdel Hamid Hamdouh and Kenya's former Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed.
She competes with South Korean Yo Myung-hee for the final victory.
